Willard Dere, M.D. joined BioMarin’s Board of Directors in July 2016 and serves as Chair of the Science and Technology Committee. He is currently Professor Emeritus of Internal Medicine at the University of Utah and Chief Advisor to the Chief Executive Officer at Angitia Biopharmaceuticals, a private biopharmaceutical company.

Dr. Dere served as Professor of Internal Medicine and the B. Lue and Hope S. Bettilyon Presidential Endowed Chair in Internal Medicine for Diabetes Research, Co-Director of the Utah Clinical and Translational Science Institute, Co-Director of the Center for Genomic Medicine, and the Associate Vice President for Research at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center from November 2014 to June 2022. Prior to returning to academia in November 2014, Dr. Dere worked in the biopharmaceutical industry for 25 years, holding multiple roles at Amgen, Inc. and Eli Lilly and Company.

Dr. Dere currently serves on the boards of Mersana Therapeutics, Inc. and Seres Therapeutics, Inc., both public biopharmaceutical companies, and Metagenomi, a privately held biopharmaceutical company. Dr. Dere served on the board of Ocera Therapeutics, Inc., until December 2017 and Radius Health, Inc. until August 2022. Dr. Dere also serves on the external advisory boards of the Utah Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and the Clinical and Translational Science Center at the University of California Davis School of Medicine. Since 2014, Dr. Dere has served on the Grants Working Group of the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine.

Dr. Dere holds a B.A. and an M.D. from the University of California, Davis, and trained in Internal Medicine at the University of Utah and Endocrinology/Metabolism at the University of California at San Francisco.
