Why Do I Pheel This Way? Episode 3: Finding Strength Through Sports While Living with Phenylketonuria

June 25, 2026

Staying active, building confidence and feeling connected to a team are defining parts of many teens’ lives. But for those living with phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare metabolic condition in which a buildup of phenylalanine (Phe) can impact mood, focus and overall well-being, participating in sports can come with challenges others may not see.

In the third episode of “Why Do I Pheel This Way?” co-hosts Connor and Londyn explore what it’s like to pursue athletics while managing PKU, and the extra layer of planning, discipline and self-awareness it requires. From balancing rigorous training schedules to carefully managing diet and medical nutrition, both share how they stay active while navigating complexities beyond the typical demands of sports.

Connor describes the experience as one that requires constant preparation and adaptation. Whether coordinating with his care team or ensuring he has the nutrition he needs to sustain his energy needs, participation in sports is rarely as simple as just showing up to practice. Despite these challenges, he highlights how the structure and discipline of athletics have played a critical role in helping him manage PKU and build lifelong habits.

For Londyn, sports also serve as a source of belonging.

“Being in sports has boosted my confidence,” she says. “And with that, I’ve also made a lot of friends… They hold me accountable, but they’re also very inclusive. They always make sure I’m okay.”

Both co-hosts emphasize the importance of support systems, from teammates to coaches, who help create an environment where they feel accepted and empowered.

“It’s not ‘That kid has PKU,’” Connor explains. “It’s more ‘He’s my teammate, and he has PKU.’”

Beyond performance, both Londyn and Connor highlight the positive impact of exercise on their mental health. From improving mood to reducing stress and anxiety, staying active serves as a powerful tool in navigating the emotional aspects of living with PKU.

The conversation offers a reminder that while participation in sports may look different for young people managing PKU, it can still be deeply rewarding and worthwhile.
